Today marks the World Day against smoking and the Ministry of Health in FYROM has planned several activities, including free check-ups for lung diseases. According to statistics, in FYROM there are around 700 thousand smokers, who smoke around 11 tons of cigarettes a year.
According to the Institute of Public Health, the situation with youngsters who start smoking at an early age is alarming. According to the data, 43% of young people smoke their first cigarette when they are 15 and this trend is growing.
“There must be a stronger awareness about the fact that smoking kills. We are holding such campaign in order to help smokers give up smoking. We are demanding measures to be taken in order to stop cigarette adverts”, says Elena Cosevska from the Institute of Public Health.
Tobacco has around four thousand chemical substances and 250 are damaging. 50 of them cause cancer. Besides smokers, there are also serious consequences for passive smokers. According to World Health Organization, 21% of deaths in the world come as a result of smoking and from one year to another, figures are growing. /balkaneu.com/
