Albanian hikers have undertaken a very ambitious quest, that of climbing mount Aconcagua in Argentina, which is 6,962 meters high. The group (photo) of three hikers is comprised of Mateo Begeja, 20 years of age, Florian Hackaj, 30 years of age and Ibrahim Hackaj, 65 years of age.
Ibrahim Hackaj is a record holder on his own, because he’s the oldest Albanian hiker to climb these peaks.
President of “Dajti Alpino-Turistik” Association, Xhim Begeja says that the three Albanian hikers are in the final stage of their quest toward the highest peak of the South American continent.
“This is a 6.962 meter high mountain and the three hikers have so far climbed 5.100 meters”, said Begeja, who keeps in touch through the internet with his son, the 20 year old Mateo, who is part of this mission.
Mateo Begeja is one of the 6 hikers who in 2012, in the framework of the 100th anniversary of Albania managed to climb the highest peak in the world, the Everest, 8848 meters high, by waving an Albanian flag there.
Communicating through the internet from the heights of the Argentinean mount, Mateo recalls the experience in Everest.
“We are well-writes the 20 year old: Yesterday I remembered the journey to Everest, from the base camp up to camp ABC. The climb so far was long, but without any problems and I can say that everything is going well and my body is reacting well”.
The president of “Dajti Alpino-Turistik” Association, Xhim Begeja says that one of the main challenges of the Argentinean mountain peak is the tricky weather.
Such thing is also admitted by Mateo, who says that “the weather is not on our side”. Mateo says that several hikers have not been able to make it up to the top. “14 hikers made their way back yesterday, without reaching the peak”. He adds that there are 700 hikers in the camp, who have returned without being able to reach the mountain peak.
The young man who inherits his father’s talent, Xhim Begeja, says that he’s hoping to reach the peak on January 26 or 27. “I hope to have the weather on our side. I didn’t think that we would have such problems with the weather, which has been snowy and rainy”.
In the past 24 hours, Mateo writes that the three hikers has traveled two days in order to climb 5.100 meters and that they have settled in the intermediary “Canada” camp, situated at 5,075 meters high.
The young man says that the Albanian group has still a lot of travelling ahead. He claims that they are about to undertake the final quest toward Aconcagua peak. The entire journey consists of 4 stops, Camp 1, Camp 2, Camp 3 ending up at the peak which is 6,962 meters high.
“We hope that the weather will improve, because no climbing to the peak has taken place in the past few days, as the wind reaches speeds 100-130 km an hour, -says Mateo Begeja who is on this mountain for the past month and a half.
He says that after the “conquest” of Everest, the quest toward Aconkagua is another joy for him. But the final objective is the “conquest” of the highest peaks in the seven continents of the world. /ibna/
