Citizens in FYR Macedonia demand more control of MPs over the government and for them to be closer to the citizens. This was the conclusion of a study conducted by the Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” in Skopje called “Parliament under scrutiny and strengthening of political debate”.

The citizens believe that parliament cannot function without the opposition, which is boycotting this institution as it doesn’t recognize the recent elections. Over 76% of the citizens who were asked, say that the majority must pay more attention to the opposition.

Meanwhile, 82,4% of the citizens demand for MPs to have more control over the work of the government. The analysis says that the citizens are very critical about the functioning of parliament, because there is no debate in this institution and MPs are only used for their vote.

But, citizens are also discontent about the relations that exist between MPs and voters. Over 50% of them believe that MPs avoid their voters as soon as they win their seat and that a regular communication to heed the problems of the people is lacking.

Over 90% of the citizens believe and demand a better quality of laws voted in parliament. This study has been funded by the European Union, while it involved 1 thousand citizens of different communities in the country. /ibna/
