Croatian citizens, foundations and companies in the two weeks that have passed since the humanitarian disaster caused by the devastating earthquake in Nepal, have donated 700 thousand HRK (92 thousand euro) for helping children and families in this country, UNICEF office for Croatia announced on Monday.

The biggest individual donor was Croatian Telecom, which along with its corporate donation urged to its users to donate via the internet.

“Natural disasters know no boundaries, but, fortunately, they are also not recognized by human solidarity. We thank all those who in such short period of time accepted the invitation of UNICEF, and their donations helped deliver humanitarian aid to children and families of Nepal”, said the Head of UNICEF Office for Croatia Valentina Otmačić.

Although the number of the earthquake victims is still increasing, because many bodies are still buried under the ruins, according to the latest figures, more than 7,600 people lost their lives, while 16,300 were injured.

Among the victims of the earthquake the most vulnerable are children, and as many as 1.7 million of them are affected by the earthquake and are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

Also 191 thousand homes were destroyed, and for millions of children continuing their education is uncertain because their schools collapsed in the quake.

I order to provide much-needed assistance to traumatized children, UNICEF has mobilized all partners and its own forces on the ground for delivering aid to those who are most in need of water, medicines, food, water purification tablets and tents for temporary accommodation.

UNICEF for Croatia also thanked the leading Croatian Internet portals for publishing UNICEF’s banner and became a part of the campaign for the children of Nepal, the statement notes.
