Euro MP, Knut Fleckenstein says that political forces in Albania must find consensus about the reform in the justice system.
He says that the basis for compromise in the justice system must be the recommendation of the Venice Commission.
Mr. Knut Fleckenstein is in Tirana, where he held a number of meetings with the speaker of Parliament, Ilir Meta, Prime Minister Edi Rama and leader of opposition, Lulzim Basha.
Mr. Fleckenstein says that he has found the understanding of all political parties for the reform in the justice system.
Mr. Fleckenstein sees this as a positive signal, adding that “the recommendations of the Venice Commission must be waited and that this should be the basis for all the discussions that will be held after that and then for its approval in parliament”. For Mr. Fleckenstein, reform in the justice system must become concrete within this spring.
He says that Albanians cannot fight corruption and organized crime, if there are no independent judges and prosecutors.
Therefore, Mr. Fleckenstein says, this reform in the justice system is more necessary than all other reforms that Albania is delivering.
But how long will the implementation of this reform last? Mr. Fleckenstein doesn’t have an answer either. “I don’t know, but I hope it occurs as soon as possible, because it would be in the best interest of the country and the people. I hope that everyone will be committed and that progress will be marked as soon as possible.
The MEP, who has been actively involved in the developments in Albania, says that if the Albanian majority and opposition find a common language for the approval of the reform in the justice system, is this a clear message for Brussels that Albania is getting ready to launch EU accession talks?
“If a common language is found for the approval of this reform, this would be a clear message for Brussels that this country is ready for the next step and we of the European Union will launch negotiations as soon as possible”. /ibna/
