During the last war in Kosovo, sexual violence by Serb forces has been used as an instrument to install fear and oppression among innocent citizens.

This was how the president of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga started her address in the forum dubbed “Sexual violence in the conflict and beyond”, organized by Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society of the Maltese President, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca.

Jahjaga said almost 20 thousand innocent people suffer the wounds of the sexual violence caused by Serb forces.

“While we moved forward to build our future from the ruins of destruction and human suffering, by facing the challenges of building a peaceful and a stable country, we left the victims of this terrible crime to fight the shame and isolation and the social exemption without the right institutional and social support”, Jahjaga said.

The president said that women, who have survived the war, continue to live in fear and anxiety.

“I have heard testimonies by mothers who have seen their daughters be raped, beaten and tortured in front of their eyes, women who have been raped in front of their husbands and fathers. Testimonies of little children who survived these inhuman acts, of women who lost their children as a result of this shameful crime. But in spite of this, there are women and girls who found the courage to build their lives once again, care for their children and families”, Jahjaga said.

Jahjaga also added that there’s still much to be done to offer justice to those who deserve it. /ibna/
