Vuk Jeremic, former Serbian foreign minister, announced today that he would not give up from running for president in favor of ex-ombudsman Sasa Jankovic. Jeremic, who was also United Nations General Assembly head, has started his campaign earlier this year; Jankovic officially begun his battle for presidency on Sunday.
“I have always been saying that, if our priority is to change the regime, it would be natural to unite ourselves around the candidate which has best chances to win”, Jeremic told Kurir daily adding that he respects Jeremic but believes that he is a favorite.
According to Jeremic, opposition including “Jankovic and his associates”, should direct its campaign “exclusively” against Vucic, alluding to current prime minister Aleksandar who was nominated as ruling party’s candidate for president.
“These should not be the election to choose an opposition leader, but rather to defeat the regime”, Jeremic explained.
“The main precondition to overthrow this regime and to crate the new system that works for ordinary people is to prevent Vucic to win in the first round. And what we need for this is high turnout”, Jeremic said.
In his words, opposition should focus itself on mobilization of “as many people as possible”, rather than “exhausting by negotiating”./ΙΒΝΑ
