A large amount of narcotic substances was discovered today on the Albanian-Greek border, after it had crossed the Albanian customs without any difficulties.
The nearly one and a half ton of marijuana was seized on the border crossing point of Kakavija, on the Greek side of the border, after it had passed the Albanian side of the customs.
The drug was stored inside a refrigerating lorry registered in Albania. The driver of the vehicle is on the run.
The discovery of the drugs was made incidentally at the moment when the shift customs officials asked the driver of the lorry to open it for a routine check, but the latter, instead of obeying, left to the green border, toward Albania.
Greek police in cooperation with Albanian police, have launched an operation for the arrest of the driver who was transporting the cannabis.
Greek authorities have been alarmed, because recently, the traffic of narcotics is being diverted through land routes.
Yesterday, 370 kg of marijuana were seized in Patra, while during an operation carried out today in Igumenitsa, two Greek nationals were arrested with 125 kg of marijuana.
Last year, at least 2.5 million roots of cannabis were cultivated in Albania, according to official sources. This quantity was four times higher than in 2015.
But, this reported quantity is based on police information which are believed to be several times lower than the real cultivated amount.
Recently, many quantities of processed drugs are being attempted to be trafficked to EU member countries. In different operations conducted in the recent days, Albanian, Italian and Greek police have seized several tons of marijuana.
Many people believe that this is a small part of the quantity that is being taken out of Albania. /balkaneu.com/
