Authorities in Kosovo have made all the preparations for the registration of the population in the four communes of Northern Kosovo inhabited by a Serb majority.

But, representatives of the Serb community in this region have not expressed their readiness for this registration.

Head of the Serb List, Slavko Simic says that mayors and political representatives from the north have made it clear that it is impossible to apply this law.

“Serbs in the north of Kosovo are still waiting on positive signals for the application of the Brussels agreements, which means the establishment of the Association of Serb Communes. If this association is not formed, then the citizens will not be ready to participate in this census”, he said.

However, deputy minister of the Administration of Local Government in the Government of Kosovo, Bajram Gecaj says that he hopes that the process of the registration of the population in northern communes will start in the fall of this year.

“However, we have had declarations by several representatives of the Serb community that they are not willing to do this, although earlier, we have been asked for this to happen, due to the problems that we’ve had with the budget. We will see how things go. The law has been approved and the census must take place this year”, Gecaj said.

Gecaj says that institutions of Kosovo have constantly worked and are working to create a safe and suitable environment for the registration of the population in the north.

Meanwhile, there was a census in Kosovo in 2011, but it didn’t include the northern communes of Northern Mitrovica, Leposavic, Zubin Potok and Zvecan, which refused to participate in this process. /balkaneu.com/
